The short answer

The best college recruiting app depends on the job you need done, and most athletes need two or three apps, not one. FieldLevel and SportsRecruits are the best free places to be found by college coaches, Rosterhunter ($19.99 a month) is best for finding roster openings, and NextCommit (our product, free for 10 emails a week) is best for emailing coaches directly with tracking. Families who want a human advisor should compare CaptainU Gold ($39.95 a month) with NCSA, whose packages families report at $2,000 to $6,000+.

  • Be found by coaches: FieldLevel (free; Silver, Gold, and Platinum cost $29, $49, and $79 a month) or SportsRecruits (free; Pro price not published, reported at about $99 a month or $399 a year).
  • Get endorsed: FieldLevel, where your high school or club coach promotes you to college coaches and writes an evaluation that only coaches can see.
  • Find roster openings: Rosterhunter, $19.99 a month or $149.99 a year, with unlimited coach emails on every plan.
  • Email coaches and track replies: NextCommit, free for 10 AI-personalized emails a week; Varsity adds reply tracking and automated follow-ups for $19.99 a month.
  • Get a human advisor: CaptainU Gold ($39.95 a month, up to one counselor meeting a month) or NCSA (prices not published; families report $2,000 to $6,000+).
  • Film and organization: keep film on Hudl or YouTube (SportsRecruits and FieldLevel both accept Hudl video), and track up to five schools free in Recruit Playbook.

How we compared these recruiting apps

Disclosure first: NextCommit is our product. It is judged on the same jobs as every other service here, and where a competitor is the better fit we say so. FieldLevel and SportsRecruits beat it at getting you found, Rosterhunter at roster-openings data, and NCSA and CaptainU at human advice.

We checked every price and feature on the vendor's own website on September 30, 2026. NCSA's live site blocked automated access, so NCSA details come from archived copies of its own pages and its app listings. When a vendor does not publish a price, the tables say "not published" rather than guessing. The only outside price reports are clearly labeled: SportsRecruits Pro figures reported by clubs and families, and NCSA package ranges reported by families in our NCSA cost guide.

App ratings come from the US Apple App Store and Google Play on the same day. Scale numbers such as athletes, coaches, and commitments are each company's own claims, and none of them publishes how it counts.

We organized the guide around jobs rather than brands: be discoverable by coaches, get endorsed by your own coach, find roster openings, email coaches directly, track replies, and get a human advisor. No single app is best at all six.

FieldLevel: the best free app for getting found

FieldLevel is the best free recruiting app for getting found by college coaches, as long as your high school or club coach will use it with you.

The free athlete plan has no time limit and includes unlimited video, stats and metrics, a profile college coaches can find in search, and coach references. What makes FieldLevel different is the coach network: your high school, club, or junior college coach can send college coaches an Athlete Promotion with your full profile and a personal note, and can write an evaluation that projects your best-fit level, from professional through NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, and junior college. Only coaches can see those evaluations, not the athlete. College coaches also post recruiting needs by class and position; the public needs page showed 14,281 on September 30, 2026. In August 2026 the NJCAA named FieldLevel its Official Recruiting Network.

Premium prices are public. Silver is $29 a month or $278 a year and shows which colleges viewed your profile, plus college matches and research. Gold is $49 a month or $470 a year and adds needs alerts, contacting 20 colleges a month, and a profile boost. Platinum is $79 a month or $758 a year with unlimited college contacts. If your coach buys at least five athlete seats, annual Gold costs $79 to $139 per athlete instead of $470, though bulk seats do not include the profile boost.

The limits: free athletes cannot send the first message to a college coach, and your coach can promote a free athlete only to college coaches in their own FieldLevel network. Parents do not get separate profiles. We found no AI writing feature on its public pages. Its iPhone app is the highest rated in this guide at 4.9 from 2,567 ratings, while reviews report complaints about Premium cost and outdated coach listings.

SportsRecruits: best when your club already uses it

SportsRecruits is the best fit when your club or high school already runs recruiting through it, and the hardest app here to price if you are buying on your own.

The free athlete account includes a recruiting profile, unlimited video, a highlight reel editor, school research, a target list, open Roster Needs posted by college coaches, and alerts when a college views you (without naming the college). College coaches use SportsRecruits free, and the men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and field hockey coaches associations (IMLCA, IWLCA, and NFHCA) run their official recruiting platforms on it. At select lacrosse, soccer, and women's volleyball events, its EventBeacon coach app pulls in both free and Pro profiles. SportsRecruits says more than 400,000 athletes and 2,000 club and high school organizations use it every day.

Pro adds messaging any college coach, seeing which colleges viewed you, a Roster Needs filter in select sports, and IMG Academy+ Essentials. SportsRecruits does not publish the Pro price; its pricing page sends logged-out visitors to a login screen. A field hockey club and a competitor site report $99 a month or $399 a year for a direct subscription, and a lacrosse club describes Pro as a $399 value, so treat those as reported figures that may differ by sport. Athletes on a club or high school that has an organization account get Pro through it. Subscriptions renew automatically, and the Terms of Use say purchases are non-refundable.

Since May 2025, SportsRecruits and NCSA share a parent company, IMG Academy, and SportsRecruits points families who want one-on-one help to NCSA. The Pro app is iPhone only and works only for Pro members, with 3.2 stars from 14 ratings. Several parents on a softball forum said it is worth it mainly when a club or school pays.

NCSA: a human advisor, at a package price

NCSA is the right choice only if you want a person guiding the process and can afford a package that families report at $2,000 to $6,000+.

The NCSA profile is free, and NCSA says a free profile can reach more than 40,000 college coaches and that it has helped more than 330,000 athletes commit. Paid tiers are named Champion, Elite, MVP, and MVP+, but NCSA does not publish prices and asks families to schedule a call for a personalized quote. Its App Store listing says premium memberships add more ways to connect with colleges, more coach-view tracking, a message center, and guidance from recruiting coaches.

Since May 2025 NCSA and SportsRecruits have the same parent company, IMG Academy. NCSA's iPhone app has 2.8 stars from 1,384 ratings, and its Android app has 3.3 stars from 940 reviews. Keep the free profile so you exist in its database; pay for a package only if a dedicated human guide is worth the price to you. Our NCSA cost guide covers the reported package prices in detail.

CaptainU: a counselor at a monthly price

CaptainU is the cheapest way to get a human recruiting counselor on a monthly plan, but read the billing terms and recent reviews before you upgrade.

Bronze is a free profile with stats, pictures, videos, and evaluations, and new athletes get a 14-day trial of Silver features capped at 10 colleges and 10 coach messages. Silver ($22.50 a month) shows who viewed your profile and lets you message college coaches, with college matching and email support. Gold ($39.95 a month) adds up to one meeting a month with a CaptainU recruiting counselor. Platinum ($199.95 a month) adds a dedicated counselor, an athletic assessment with a division recommendation, and a scholarship and financial aid assessment. Prices are monthly only, with no contract.

Ownership changed in 2026. CaptainU rebranded as Stack Athlete in May 2025, has since returned to the CaptainU name, and says MLQ Ventures LLC, led by a senior CaptainU staff member, acquired it effective April 6, 2026. Older articles that call it Stack Athlete or part of Stack Sports are out of date; stackathlete.com now redirects to captainu.com. CaptainU says more than 3 million athletes have used it, and its About page lists more than 10,000 college coaches.

On Trustpilot it holds a 2.0 TrustScore from 48 reviews. The most common complaint, in reviews and parent forums, describes coach-activity alerts that parents say they had to pay to see in full and that turned out to be broad searches or camp invitations; CaptainU's own FAQ says a search alert means your profile matched a coach's search filters. Some reviewers also report charges after trying to cancel. The Terms say you are responsible for cancelling and that there are no refunds on cancellation.

Rosterhunter: best for finding roster openings

Rosterhunter is the best tool for one job: finding college programs that have room at your position and class year.

You filter by sport, position, class year, division, state, and academics, and Rosterhunter shows which programs have openings. It says its database covers 10,077+ college rosters, 45,150+ coach contacts, and 70,539+ roster openings. NCAA Division I, II, and III are live; NAIA and NJCAA are marked as coming soon. It covers 14 programs: baseball, football, basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball for men, and softball, volleyball, basketball, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccer for women.

Every plan has the same features: unlimited coach emails sent from your own inbox with open and click tracking, full rosters by class year and position, coach contact info, playing-time data, and transfer insights. It costs $19.99 a month, $49.99 a quarter, or $149.99 a year. On the web the first 3 days cost $0.99; on iOS the 3-day trial is free. Either one converts to the plan you chose unless you cancel, and the terms rule out refunds for unused time except where the law requires them.

The limits: there is no free plan, the company describes itself as a small team whose idea dates to Thanksgiving 2025, and its iPhone app has 3.5 stars from 6 ratings. Rosterhunter gives you the list and the contact, but writing each email is still your job, so pair it with a template or a generator.

Recruit Playbook: a free school-list tracker

Recruit Playbook is a lightweight school-list tracker for families who like to run recruiting as a project, and its free tier is enough to try the system.

The free tier includes a full athlete profile and tracking for up to five schools. The pipeline sorts schools into reach, match, and safety, with follow-up reminders and outreach templates, and the profile holds verified stats, video, transcripts, and your competition schedule. The paid tier, called Pro in the app's upgrade screen, adds unlimited schools, automated outreach and follow-ups, PDF profile exports, and email open tracking. No paid price is published.

It is new: the domain was registered in April 2026, and we found no app on the App Store or Google Play (an unrelated iPhone app called Recruiting Playbook is a different product). The sports in its onboarding are football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, and golf. Five schools is enough to test the workflow, not to run a full list of 30 to 50 programs.

NextCommit: best for emailing coaches directly

NextCommit is our product, and it is built for the email job: writing a personalized email to each coach and tracking what happens next, in seven sports.

The free plan includes 10 coach emails a week, the full coach database of 35,000+ coaches at 1,800+ schools, AI-personalized emails, bulk send and scheduling, school profiles, a recruiting profile builder, templates, and favorites. Each email is written for that coach from your stats, film, grades, and goals, and it is sent from your own inbox after you review it, so the coach hears from you rather than from a service. In our platform data, coaches opened about 46% of athlete emails.

Varsity is $19.99 a month or $119.94 a year for 50 emails a week, plus open tracking, reply and film-view tracking, a message center, automated follow-ups, and smart reply suggestions. Pro is $49.99 a month or $299.94 a year for 200 emails a week, plus native coach DMs on X, the Recruit Score with a projected division level, NIL valuation, school matching, roster needs analysis, an areas-of-improvement analysis, and a 24/7 recruiting assistant. There is no sales call, and monthly plans cancel anytime.

The honest limits: college coaches do not browse NextCommit profiles the way they search SportsRecruits or FieldLevel, so it is an outreach tool, not a discovery network. Pair it with a free FieldLevel or SportsRecruits profile. There is no human advisor and there are no events or showcases. It covers baseball, softball, football, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's basketball only; athletes in other sports should look at FieldLevel, SportsRecruits, or CaptainU.

Hudl: the film layer under everything else

Hudl is not a recruiting network in the same sense as the services above, but it is where many athletes already keep their game film, so treat it as the film layer that every other app links to.

Many high school and club teams record and share game film on Hudl, and athletes build highlight reels from it. SportsRecruits lets you embed Hudl video in your profile and FieldLevel imports Hudl links, so you can keep film in one place and share the same link everywhere, including in every coach email. We did not compare Hudl's plans or prices for this guide.

Film alone does not get a coach to watch. A profile coaches search, an endorsement from your coach, or an email in the coach's inbox has to put the link in front of them.

Other services we review separately

NextGoal and ProductiveRecruit also come up in searches for recruiting apps. We did not re-check their prices on September 30, 2026, so they are not in the tables above. Our NextGoal review and ProductiveRecruit comparison, linked at the end of this article, cover them.

Which recruiting apps have the best phone apps?

Ratings as shown on the US App Store and Google Play on September 30, 2026. Small rating counts swing easily, so weigh how many people rated an app as much as the stars.

  • FieldLevel: 4.9 out of 5 from 2,567 ratings on iPhone, and 4.8 from 255 reviews on Google Play.
  • NCSA: 2.8 from 1,384 ratings on iPhone, and 3.3 from 940 reviews on Google Play.
  • SportsRecruits Pro: 3.2 from 14 ratings, iPhone only, and usable only with a Pro subscription. There is no Android app.
  • CaptainU: two iPhone apps right now, Stack Athlete (4.0 from 4 ratings) and NewCaptainU (released September 18, 2026, no ratings yet), plus an Android app with no star rating shown.
  • Rosterhunter: 3.5 from 6 ratings on iPhone.
  • Recruit Playbook: no app found on the App Store or Google Play; it runs on the web.

The free stack: how to get recruited spending $0

You can cover every job except the human advisor without paying anything by combining free tiers with direct email.

What the free stack cannot do: show which colleges viewed you (FieldLevel Silver at $29 a month, CaptainU Silver at $22.50, or SportsRecruits Pro), let you message first on FieldLevel (Gold and up), track opens and replies on your emails (NextCommit Varsity at $19.99 a month, or Rosterhunter), or give you a human advisor (CaptainU Gold or Platinum, or NCSA). Pay for one of those only when you know you need it, and start monthly.

Before paying yourself, ask whether your club or high school already covers a platform. Club and school accounts on SportsRecruits include Pro for their athletes, and FieldLevel coaches can buy annual Gold seats in bulk for $79 to $139 per athlete.

  1. 1Check your level with the free Recruit Score so your target list matches the divisions where your numbers fit.
  2. 2Put your film in one place: game film and a short highlight on Hudl if your team uses it, or on YouTube.
  3. 3Make a free FieldLevel profile and ask your high school or club coach to join (it is free for coaches) and promote you to college coaches in their network.
  4. 4Make a free SportsRecruits profile with your video. It shows open Roster Needs posted by college coaches and alerts you when a college views you.
  5. 5Claim the free NCSA profile so you also exist in its database.
  6. 6Build a list of 30 to 50 programs across divisions, and track up to five in Recruit Playbook's free tier or all of them in a spreadsheet.
  7. 7Email coaches directly. NextCommit's free plan writes and sends 10 personalized emails a week from your own inbox, or you can draft your own with a free coach email generator.
  8. 8Follow up after 7 to 10 days, and send each coach an update whenever you have new film or numbers.

FAQ

Coach email questions athletes ask most

What is the best college recruiting app?

FieldLevel is the best free app for being found by college coaches, and NextCommit (our product) is the best for emailing coaches directly with tracking. FieldLevel lets your high school or club coach promote you to college coaches, and its iPhone app is rated 4.9 from 2,567 ratings. NextCommit writes a personalized email for each coach, sends it from your own inbox, and is free for 10 emails a week. Families who want a human advisor should look at NCSA or CaptainU Gold and Platinum instead.

What is the best free recruiting website?

FieldLevel. Its free athlete plan has no time limit and includes unlimited video, stats and metrics, a profile college coaches can find in search, and coach references. SportsRecruits is a close second, with a free profile, unlimited video, a highlight reel editor, and view alerts, and it is the better pick if your club already uses it. Neither free plan lets you message college coaches first, so pair a free profile with direct email.

Which recruiting apps do college coaches actually use?

FieldLevel and SportsRecruits have the clearest public evidence of college coach use. SportsRecruits is free for college coaches and hosts the official recruiting platforms of the men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and field hockey coaches associations, and the NJCAA named FieldLevel its Official Recruiting Network in August 2026. Neither company publishes a count of college coaches using it. Coaches at every level also read email: in NextCommit platform data, coaches opened about 46% of athlete emails.

Do I need to pay for a recruiting service?

No. FieldLevel, SportsRecruits, NCSA, CaptainU, Recruit Playbook, and NextCommit all have free tiers, and a free profile plus direct email to coaches covers the basics. Paying makes sense for one specific job the free tiers cannot do, such as seeing which colleges viewed you, contacting more coaches with reply tracking, roster-openings data, or a human advisor. If you pay, start with a monthly plan rather than a large package; families report NCSA packages at $2,000 to $6,000+.

What is the best recruiting app for parents?

FieldLevel is the best starting point for most parents: every price is published, the free plan has no time limit, and the athlete's own coach does the promoting. Parents who want a person to talk to can choose CaptainU Gold at $39.95 a month (up to one counselor meeting a month, no refunds on cancellation) or an NCSA package, which families report at $2,000 to $6,000+. One catch: FieldLevel has no separate parent profile, so parents sign in with the athlete's account.

Is Hudl enough to get recruited?

No. Hudl holds your film, but a coach still needs a reason to open it, which means a profile coaches search or an email that lands in their inbox. SportsRecruits accepts embedded Hudl video and FieldLevel imports Hudl links, so keep your film on Hudl and put the same link in every profile and every coach email.

Which recruiting app shows college roster openings?

Rosterhunter. Its core feature lists programs with room at your position and class year across NCAA Division I, II, and III, with NAIA and NJCAA marked as coming soon, for $19.99 a month or $149.99 a year. FieldLevel and SportsRecruits also show recruiting needs that college coaches choose to post, and NextCommit Pro includes a roster needs analysis.
