College track and field recruiting guide

Track and field recruiting starts with your marks and the right event coach

Men's and women's track and field, including cross country

Track and field is the most objective recruiting sport there is: a coach can look up your marks before watching any film. What separates recruits is whether those marks reach the right coach. Most college staffs split by event group, with distance, sprints and hurdles, jumps, and throws coaches who recruit their own athletes. NextCommit lists about 6,200 college track and field coaches at about 1,300 programs, and when you pick a school it selects the head coach and the coach for your event group.

Quick answer

How college track and field recruiting works

To get recruited for college track and field, get your marks posted on a results site such as Athletic.net, MileSplit, or TFRRS, compare them with what scores at the conference championships of the levels you are targeting, and email the event-group coach and the head coach at programs where your marks would score. Division I coaches can call, text, email, and meet you off campus starting June 15 after sophomore year, and official and unofficial visits start August 1 before junior year. Division II coaches can communicate at any time, and Division III and NAIA have no timing limits on calls and messages.

Recruiting fit

Recruit by event group

College track staffs usually split recruiting by event group. Email the coach who will actually coach you, and copy the head coach.

Sprints and hurdles

Coaches look at fully automatic (FAT) times, wind readings, and how you run in rounds. Hand times count for less, so race at meets with FAT timing before your recruiting year.

Distance and cross country

Distance coaches usually run cross country too. They read your times across the 800m, 1600m or mile, 3200m, and cross country courses, and your improvement from season to season.

Jumps, throws, and multis

Field event coaches look at certified marks, consistency across meets, and technique on video. Throwers should list the implement weight, because men's shot, discus, and hammer get heavier in college.

What track and field coaches look for by level

The cleanest test is whether your marks would score at the conference championship of a program you are targeting. Look up that meet's results on TFRRS or the conference website before you email.

College track and field recruiting timeline

Coaches recruit off results, so every season counts: cross country, indoor, and outdoor. Have your marks and list ready before Division I contact opens.

Freshman year

Get on the results sites

  • Race and compete at meets that post results to Athletic.net, MileSplit, or a state association site.
  • Run cross country and indoor if you can; more seasons means more marks and more improvement to show.
  • Track your PRs with meet, date, timing method, and wind.

Sophomore year

Build the list

  • Compare your marks with conference championship results at D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and junior college levels.
  • Build a list of 30 to 50 programs where your marks would score and email the event coaches.
  • From June 15 after this year, Division I coaches can call, text, email, and meet you off campus.

Junior year

Visits and championship marks

  • Official and unofficial visits with Division I programs can start August 1 before junior year.
  • Send updated marks after each big meet, especially indoor and outdoor championships.
  • Ask coaches what they need to see in your event to make their roster.

Senior year

Sign or keep racing

  • For the Class of 2027, Division I and II track and cross country recruits can sign starting November 11, 2026.
  • Senior cross country and indoor marks still move coaches; keep emailing new PRs.
  • Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college programs keep adding athletes into the spring.

What to send college track and field coaches

Track coaches want marks first. Put your events and PRs in the first two lines, link your results profile, and send it to the coach for your event group.

Coach Email Generator

Name, graduation year, events, high school, club team if any, GPA, and location.

PRs for each event with meet name, date, timing method (FAT or hand), and wind for sprints and jumps.

A link to your Athletic.net, MileSplit, or TFRRS profile so the coach can verify every mark.

Race or competition video for field events and hurdles, where technique matters.

Your upcoming meet schedule, including championship meets.

Why the program fits: your marks would score in their conference, the event group need, academics, or location.

College track and field recruiting FAQ

How do you get recruited for college track and field?+

Post verified marks on a results site, compare them with what scores at the conference championships of the levels you want, and email the event-group coach and the head coach at 30 to 50 programs where your marks would score. Include your PRs with meet, date, timing method, and wind, a link to your results profile, and your upcoming meet schedule.

When can college track coaches contact you?+

In Division I cross country and track and field, coaches can send recruiting materials, emails, texts, and DMs, call, and make off-campus contact starting June 15 after sophomore year; official and unofficial visits start August 1 before junior year. Division II coaches can communicate at any time, with in-person contact from June 15 before junior year. Division III and NAIA have no timing limits on calls and messages.

What marks do I need to run Division I track?+

It depends on the event and the conference. The practical test is whether your mark would score, roughly top eight, at the conference championship of the programs you are targeting. Conference results are public on TFRRS and conference websites, and they vary widely between conferences at the same division.

Should I email the head coach or the event coach?+

Both. The event-group coach usually recruits and coaches your event, so send the email to that coach and copy the head coach. In NextCommit's data, more than 1,100 coaches have distance in their title and more than 500 have sprints. When you pick a school, NextCommit selects the head coach and the coach for your event group.

How do I get recruited for cross country?+

College cross country is coached by the distance staff, so cross country recruiting is distance recruiting. Send your cross country course times with the course name, plus your 1600m or mile and 3200m times, to the distance coach. In NextCommit, cross country runners sign up for men's or women's track and field and pick distance events.

How many athletes are on a college track and field roster?+

At Division I schools in the House settlement's defendant conferences, and schools that opted in, rosters are limited to 45 in indoor and 45 in outdoor track and field for each of men and women, and 17 in cross country (NCAA Bylaw 17.2). Division II programs can award up to 12.6 scholarship equivalents in cross country and track and field combined for each of men and women (Bylaw 15.4.2.1).

Do men's and women's track teams share coaches?+

Usually. About 90% of the college track coaches in NextCommit's data are listed for both teams. Pick your own team at signup; NextCommit then shows that team's staff and writes each email for your events.
