How Softball Recruiting Works
College softball recruiting is the process by which high school athletes connect with college coaching staffs to earn a roster spot and scholarship money. There are over 400,000 high school softball players in the United States and roughly 30,000 college roster spots across all divisions. Only about 7.8% of high school players go on to play at the college level, and just 1.6% reach Division I.
Softball recruiting moves fast. Nearly 40% of D1 commitments historically happen before or during 10th grade, though recent NCAA reforms are pushing timelines later. Regardless of when you commit, the athletes who create the most options are the ones who treat recruiting like a structured project with a target list, a timeline, and a communication plan rather than waiting for coaches to find them at travel ball tournaments.
This guide covers everything you need to know: what coaches evaluate by position, recruiting timelines year by year, scholarship availability by division (including the new D1 scholarship increase to 25 per team), position-specific benchmarks, how to build your skills video, and how to communicate with coaches effectively.
What College Softball Coaches Look For
Coaches evaluate softball recruits on four layers. Understanding what matters at each level helps you position yourself correctly in your outreach and skills video.
Athletic Performance
Speed, arm strength, power, pitching velocity, and fielding range. Coaches want measurables that project to their level. For pitchers, velocity and pitch variety matter most. For position players, home-to-first time, throw velocity, and exit velocity are the key numbers.
Softball IQ & Skills Video
Game awareness, pitch selection, situational hitting, and coachability. Your skills video is your most important recruiting tool. Coaches want to see game-speed decision-making, not just batting practice. Show them you understand the game at their level.
Academic Eligibility
GPA, core courses, and test scores determine eligibility. NCAA D1 and D2 require a 2.3 core GPA with 16 core courses. A 3.0+ GPA does more than keep you eligible - it opens doors at stronger academic programs and gives you real leverage in scholarship conversations.
Character & Program Fit
Work ethic, leadership, coachability, and team fit. Coaches talk to travel ball coaches, check social media, and evaluate how you communicate. A talented player with a difficult reputation will lose opportunities to a good player with strong character.

How to Get Recruited for College Softball
Four actionable steps to build a disciplined recruiting process. No recruiting service or national ranking required.
Build Your Softball Profile
Add your measurables, academics, skills video links, and position details into a clean recruiting profile that coaches can evaluate in under 60 seconds. Include pitching velocity, home-to-first time, throw velocity, batting stats, GPA, and your top skills reel.
Build a Realistic Target List
Research programs by division, conference, region, and academic fit. Target 30-50+ schools across multiple levels. Do not limit yourself to one division. Filter by coaches who recruit your position and region. Include D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO programs.
Send Position-Specific Outreach
Craft short, personalized emails to each program's head coach or pitching/hitting coach. Reference their program specifically, include your key measurables and skills video link, and explain why you are a fit. Generic mass emails do not work. See our full guide with copy-paste templates.
Track Interest and Follow Up
Monitor which coaches open your emails, click your video links, and respond. Follow up every 4-6 weeks with updated film, stats, or camp results. Coaches recruit athletes who stay on their radar consistently.

Read: How to Email a College CoachSoftball Recruiting Mistakes to Avoid
These mistakes cost athletes opportunities every year. Avoiding them puts you ahead of most recruits immediately.
Relying on travel ball exposure alone
Travel ball gets you reps and some visibility, but most college coaches cannot attend every showcase. The athletes who earn offers are the ones who also proactively reach out with film, measurables, and a genuine interest in the program.
Sending generic mass emails
Coaches can immediately tell when an email was sent to 200 schools. A short, specific email that references the program, the position coach, and why you fit is far more effective than a long generic pitch.
Committing too early without exploring options
Nearly 40% of D1 softball commitments happen before 11th grade, but early commits are less likely to enroll where they committed due to coaching changes or fit issues. Take time to explore multiple programs before committing.
Neglecting academics
A 2.3 GPA is the NCAA minimum, not the goal. Poor academics eliminate programs from your list before you ever send an email. Strong grades give you leverage in scholarship conversations and open doors at better schools.
Poor quality skills video
A 15-minute video with warmup tosses and batting practice swings will not get watched. Coaches spend 30-60 seconds on initial video review. Lead with your best plays, show position-specific skills, and keep it under 5 minutes.
Quitting after no initial response
Most coaches do not respond to the first email. Consistent follow-up every 4-6 weeks with updated film, stats, or camp results keeps you visible. The athletes who persist are the ones who earn late offers.

Send Personalized Emails at Scale

Position Group Callouts
Softball recruiting is not one market. Each position group needs different proof points and a different outreach angle.
Pitchers
Lead with velocity, pitch variety, spin rates, and command. Show multiple pitch types from both catcher and side views. Coaches want to see a change-up with 15+ mph differential and at least one quality movement pitch.
Catchers
Pop time to second base is the headline number. Also show blocking technique, game management, framing ability, and how you communicate with pitchers. Hitting is secondary but matters for playing time.
Infielders
Home-to-first time, throw velocity, fielding range, and quick hands. Show plays that demonstrate lateral movement, arm strength across the diamond, and the ability to make plays on the run.
Outfielders
Speed, routes, arm strength from the outfield, and the ability to cover ground. Show catches that demonstrate range, accurate throws to bases, and game-speed reads on fly balls.

Softball Recruiting FAQ
How do I get recruited for college softball?+
Start by identifying your realistic division level based on your measurables and academics. Build a skills video, create an online recruiting profile, and send personalized outreach to coaches at programs that fit your level. Attend camps and showcases during sophomore and junior year. Only about 7.8% of high school softball players go on to play in college, and the athletes who run a structured process are the ones who earn spots.
What do college softball coaches look for in a recruit?+
Coaches evaluate athletic ability (speed, arm strength, power, pitching velocity, fielding range), softball IQ (game awareness, pitch selection, situational hitting, coachability), academics (GPA, core courses, test scores), and character (work ethic, team fit, competitiveness). The weight of each factor depends on your position and the division level.
When does the softball recruiting process start?+
The recruiting process starts earlier in softball than most sports. Nearly 40% of D1 commitments happen before or during 10th grade, though recent NCAA rule changes are pushing timelines later. Freshman year should focus on development. Sophomore year is when camps and outreach become important. Junior year is the peak window for D2, D3, and NAIA. Athletes can always initiate contact with coaches at any time.
How many softball scholarships are available at each division?+
D1 programs now have up to 25 equivalency scholarships per team (increased from 12 in 2025-26). D2 has up to 7.2 equivalency scholarships. D3 offers no athletic scholarships. NAIA offers up to 12. Because D1, D2, and NAIA use equivalency scholarships, the money can be split among more players than the count suggests.
What pitching velocity do I need for college softball?+
D1 programs typically recruit pitchers throwing 63+ mph with a quality change-up and movement pitch. D2 programs look for 58+ mph. D3 and NAIA recruit at 55+ mph with strong command. Command and secondary pitches often matter as much as raw speed.
Do I need to attend softball camps to get recruited?+
Camps are one of the most effective ways to get evaluated, especially if you are not nationally ranked. College camps put you directly in front of the coaching staff. Elite travel ball showcases also create opportunities. Focus on camps at schools you are genuinely interested in.
What should I include in my softball skills video?+
Keep it under 5 minutes. For pitchers, show multiple pitch types from catcher and side views with velocity readings. For hitters, show live at-bats or cage work with exit velocity if available. For fielders, show range, arm strength, and footwork. Include your name, position, jersey number, graduation year, GPA, and travel team on the title card.
Can I get recruited if I am not a top-ranked prospect?+
Yes. The vast majority of college softball players were not nationally ranked. D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO programs recruit hundreds of athletes every year based on skills video, measurables, academics, and character. Running a disciplined recruiting process matters more than a ranking.
How do I email a college softball coach?+
Keep your email short. Include your name, position, high school, travel team, graduation year, key measurables (velocity, home-to-first, GPA), skills video link, and why you are interested in that program. Do not send mass generic emails. Follow up every 4 to 6 weeks.
What GPA do I need to play college softball?+
NCAA D1 and D2 require a minimum core GPA of 2.3 with 16 core courses. D3 has no NCAA minimum but you must be admitted. NAIA requires a 2.0. In practice, a 3.0+ GPA opens significantly more doors and gives you leverage in scholarship conversations across all levels.
