The short answer
Yes, CaptainU is legit. It is a real, long-running recruiting company (founded in 2007, per CaptainU) that has been owned by MLQ Ventures LLC of Frisco, Texas, since April 6, 2026. Plans run from free to $22.50, $39.95, or $199.95 a month with no contract, and CaptainU fits budget-minded families who will do their own outreach.
- Cost: Bronze is free, Silver is $22.50 a month, Gold is $39.95 a month, and Platinum is $199.95 a month. Only monthly prices are shown.
- Owner: MLQ Ventures LLC, which CaptainU says is led by a senior CaptainU staff member. From December 2016, CaptainU belonged to Blue Star Sports, later renamed Stack Sports.
- Stack Athlete: CaptainU relaunched as Stack Athlete on May 20, 2025, then went back to the CaptainU name. stackathlete.com now redirects to captainu.com.
- Reviews: Trustpilot shows a 2.0 TrustScore from 48 reviews. Reviews most often report frustration with coach-activity alerts and with billing around cancellation.
- Cancel: yes, at any time, by downgrading to Bronze Free. The Terms of Service say there are no refunds on cancellation.
- Alternatives: NCSA for a larger network with recruiting coaches (price not published), Rosterhunter for roster openings, and NextCommit for personalized coach emails sent from your own inbox.
How we reviewed CaptainU
Disclosure first: NextCommit is our product, and it appears here as one alternative. We use the same criteria for every service, and where a competitor is the better fit, we say so.
We checked CaptainU's prices, plan details, FAQ, Terms of Service, and ownership announcement on captainu.com on September 30, 2026, along with its app listings, its Trustpilot page, coverage of past acquisitions, and public forum threads. We did not sign up or log in, so checkout screens were not inspected. Prices for the alternatives come from each company's own site on the same day. NCSA's live site blocked automated access, so NCSA facts come from archived copies of its own pages and its app listings. Where no public price exists, we write "not published".
Reviews are summarized in our own words as what reviewers report. They are individual accounts we could not check independently, not findings about the company.
Is CaptainU legit?
Verdict: yes, CaptainU is a legitimate, established company, and most complaints about it concern value and billing, not whether the service is real.
CaptainU says it was founded in 2007 and won Chicago Booth's New Venture Challenge that spring (Preqin lists 2008). In December 2016, Blue Star Sports, backed by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, acquired it. The announcement described more than 2.5 million users across 20 sports and did not disclose terms. Blue Star Sports later renamed itself Stack Sports.
Today CaptainU says more than 3 million athletes have used it and that it reaches more than 10,000 college coaches, though its athletes page gives a different figure of over 8,000 active coaches, colleges, and teams. College coaches use a separate product, CaptainU College, which offers a 30-day free trial, and CaptainU's college page says that coach subscription is approved under NCAA bylaws for Division I football and basketball.
If CaptainU feels confusing right now, that is understandable. Between May 2025 and April 2026 it changed its name to Stack Athlete, changed back, and changed owners. Two iOS apps exist (the older Stack Athlete app and NewCaptainU, released September 18, 2026), stackathlete.com redirects to captainu.com, and the site footer still links to Stack Athlete social accounts. None of that makes the company illegitimate, but it is fair to want to know exactly who is billing you: MLQ Ventures LLC, doing business as CaptainU.
Who owns CaptainU now? Ownership and name history
MLQ Ventures LLC owns CaptainU, effective April 6, 2026, and does business as CaptainU from 5 Cowboys Way, Suite 300, in Frisco, Texas.
CaptainU presents the 2026 sale as a continuation from inside the company rather than an outside takeover. LinkedIn lists Denver, Colorado, and Plano, Texas, as locations, and the current Terms of Service are governed by Texas law.
What it means for you: make account changes through the current captainu.com site or app, and check that charges match the plan you chose.

How much does CaptainU cost? Plans and prices
CaptainU costs $0 to $199.95 a month. These are the athlete plans listed on captainu.com on September 30, 2026. Only monthly prices are shown, with no annual or quarterly option.
CaptainU's pricing page says, "There's never a contract." The free trial lasts 14 days and is capped at 10 colleges on your prospects list and 10 messages to coaches, without profile activity alerts. When it ends, the account goes back to free Bronze, and CaptainU's FAQ describes no automatic charge.
One small inconsistency: the separate athlete plans page leaves out the video edit items that the main athletes page lists for Gold and Platinum, so confirm video editing before you pay if it matters to you. Under the Terms, price changes take effect in the billing cycle after notice.
| Plan | Price | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Free | Profile with stats, pictures, videos, and evaluations; new athletes get a 2-week free trial of Silver features |
| Silver | $22.50 a month | See who views your profile, message college coaches, college matching, profile building, online recruiting plan guidance, and email support from recruiting experts |
| Gold | $39.95 a month | Silver features plus up to one meeting a month with a CaptainU recruiting counselor, regular expert advice, and basic highlight video edits |
| Platinum | $199.95 a month | Silver tools plus a dedicated counselor by phone, customized highlight video edits, an athletic assessment with a division recommendation, personalized college matching, ongoing coach communication guidance, and a scholarship and financial aid assessment |
Is CaptainU worth it?
Verdict: CaptainU is worth it for families who want a low monthly price for coach messaging and will run their own outreach, and a poor buy for families who expect alerts or the platform alone to produce recruiting interest.
Silver is the core paid plan: at $22.50 a month it unlocks messaging college coaches and seeing who views your profile. Gold, at $39.95 a month, adds up to one counselor meeting a month, which makes it the lowest published monthly price for scheduled human advice among the services in this review. Platinum, at $199.95 a month, is priced for families who want a dedicated counselor.
Forum posters often describe CaptainU as legitimate but unnecessary, because families can email coaches directly. Others say smaller NAIA and small-college programs do use it, and one 2018 parent credited it with real exposure when paired with active outreach. The pattern is consistent: CaptainU works as a tool you drive, not as a service that recruits for you.
- Worth it if you will message coaches every week, want profile-view data, and prefer a low monthly price with no contract.
- Worth considering Gold if you want one counselor meeting a month without paying for a large package.
- Not worth it if you are paying mainly to find out which coach triggered an activity alert.
- Try first: the 14-day free trial gives you 10 colleges and 10 coach messages, enough to test whether the coaches you care about respond.
CaptainU reviews: what families report
CaptainU has a 2.0 TrustScore from 48 reviews on Trustpilot. The profile is claimed, and the company has replied to a few reviews. Most 1-star reviews date from 2021 to 2025, and the two newest, from February and June 2026, gave 3 stars (positive about support) and 2 stars (saying coaches do not use the site).
App ratings add little signal so far. The older Stack Athlete iOS app shows 4.0 stars from just 4 ratings, NewCaptainU has no ratings yet, and the CaptainU Android app shows 50+ downloads.
- Coach-activity alerts: the most common complaint. Parents describe emails saying a coach found or searched for their athlete, say they had to pay to see which coach, and report that the interest turned out to be broad searches or camp invitations. This theme appears on Trustpilot from 2022 to 2024 and in forum threads from 2015 and 2018.
- What CaptainU says about alerts: its FAQ explains that a search alert means your profile matched a coach's search filters, and that an opened message does not mean the coach replied.
- Billing and cancellation: several reviewers from 2022 to 2025 report charges after they tried to cancel, an account reactivated and charged again, a hard-to-find cancel path, or paying while locked out. These are individual allegations that could not be checked independently.
- Email volume: one reviewer reports still receiving emails years after unsubscribing, and forum posters describe several emails a week. CaptainU says every email has an unsubscribe or manage-preferences link and that support can help.
- Positive notes: the February 2026 reviewer was positive about support, forum posters say smaller NAIA and small-college programs do use it, and one parent credited it with real exposure when paired with active outreach.
Can you cancel CaptainU? How to cancel and delete your account
Yes. You can cancel a CaptainU paid plan at any time, but the Terms of Service say there are no refunds on cancellation.
The Terms make you solely responsible for cancelling a paid subscription, and if CaptainU suspends or ends an account, there is no refund for unused time. They also require individual arbitration through JAMS with a class action waiver, and you have 30 days to opt out of that.
- 1Log in to CaptainU and open Plan.
- 2Choose to downgrade to Bronze Free.
- 3Expect a retention prompt asking whether you made a team, then continue until the downgrade is confirmed.
- 4Save a screenshot or confirmation email for your records.
- 5To delete the account entirely, downgrade to Bronze first, then email Help@CaptainU.com. Deletion cannot be undone.
Before you buy CaptainU: a checklist
Run through this list before you enter a card for CaptainU or any other recruiting service.
- 1Use the 14-day free trial first. Message up to 10 coaches you actually want to hear from and see who replies.
- 2Buy a plan for a specific feature: Silver for messaging and profile views, Gold only if you will use the monthly counselor meeting, Platinum only if you want a dedicated counselor.
- 3Write down your billing date and the cancel path (Plan, then downgrade to Bronze Free). The Terms put cancellation on you and rule out refunds on cancellation.
- 4Read coach-view alerts carefully. A search alert means your profile matched a coach's filters, and an opened message is not a reply. Judge interest by replies.
- 5Confirm who you are paying: the current operator is MLQ Ventures LLC, doing business as CaptainU, and older Stack Athlete branding still appears in places.
- 6Set your email preferences on day one with the manage-preferences link in any CaptainU email.
- 7Know the dispute terms: individual arbitration, with 30 days to opt out.
- 8Know your level before you pay anyone, so you target programs that fit.

CaptainU vs NCSA: which is better?
Verdict: CaptainU is the better choice if you want published, low monthly prices, and NCSA is the better choice if you want a much larger network and a personal recruiting coach and are willing to buy at a price quoted on a call.
Pricing is the clearest difference. CaptainU publishes every plan, from $22.50 to $199.95 a month. NCSA lists Free, Champion, Elite, MVP, and MVP+ tiers, with IMG Academy+ nutrition coaching included in MVP+ or sold as an add-on, but it asks families to schedule a call for a personalized quote. Our NCSA cost guide covers what families report paying.
Scale favors NCSA on its own numbers. NCSA says more than 40,000 college coaches can be reached through a free profile and that it has helped more than 330,000 athletes commit, about 30,000 a year. CaptainU says it reaches more than 10,000 college coaches, and no commitment count appeared on the CaptainU pages we reviewed.
On human help, CaptainU limits counselor access to Gold (up to one meeting a month) and Platinum (a dedicated counselor), while NCSA's cost page lists a personal recruiting coach with its MVP and MVP+ memberships and group coach support with Elite. On ownership, CaptainU belongs to MLQ Ventures LLC, and NCSA lists itself on Google Play as a subsidiary of IMG Academy Parent, LLC. On apps, NCSA shows about 2.8 stars from 1,384 ratings on iOS and 3.3 stars from 940 reviews on Google Play, while CaptainU's apps are too new or too small to compare.
Rosterhunter: a CaptainU alternative built on roster openings
Verdict: Rosterhunter is the better CaptainU alternative if your main question is which programs actually have room at your position and class year.
Rosterhunter shows which college programs have openings at your position for your class year, with filters for sport, position, class year, division, state, and academics. Every plan includes unlimited coach emails sent from your own inbox with open and click tracking, full rosters, coach contact information, playing-time data, and transfer insights. It reports 10,077+ college rosters and 45,150+ coach contacts across 14 sports programs.
It costs $0.99 for the first 3 days on the web (free through the App Store on iOS), then $19.99 a month, $49.99 every 3 months, or $149.99 a year, with the same features on every plan. Its Terms say the intro converts automatically to the chosen plan and that there are no refunds for unused periods except where the law requires them. The limits: NCAA Divisions I, II, and III are live while NAIA and NJCAA are marked as coming soon, and Rosterhunter describes itself as a small team, with an iOS app first released in May 2026.
Recruit Playbook: a free recruiting tracker
Verdict: Recruit Playbook suits organized families who want a free recruiting tracker, but it is very new and does not publish its paid price.
Recruit Playbook is a self-serve platform with a tiered pipeline of target schools (reach, match, and safety), follow-up reminders, outreach templates, and a profile with stats, video, transcripts, and a competition schedule. The free tier includes a full profile and tracking for up to 5 schools. The paid Pro tier adds unlimited schools, automated outreach and follow-ups, PDF profile exports, and email open tracking, but no price is published.
Its domain was registered on April 30, 2026, no Recruit Playbook app was found in either app store, and it has no Trustpilot page yet, so there is little track record to judge. Its onboarding lists eight sports: football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, and golf.
NextCommit: a CaptainU alternative for personalized coach emails
Verdict: NextCommit is a better fit than CaptainU for athletes in its seven sports who want every coach to get a personalized email from the athlete's own inbox, with tracking and follow-ups built in.
NextCommit is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Instead of waiting on activity alerts, you choose the programs, and AI writes a different email for each coach from your stats, film, grades, and goals. You review every draft, and it sends from your own inbox, so coaches see a message from you, not from a platform. In NextCommit platform data, coaches opened about 46% of athlete emails.
Free includes 10 coach emails a week, the full database of 35,000+ coaches at 1,800+ schools, bulk send and scheduling, school profiles, a recruiting profile builder, templates, and favorites. Varsity is $19.99 a month or $119.94 a year for 50 emails a week, with open, reply, and film-view tracking, a message center, automated follow-ups, and smart reply suggestions. Pro is $49.99 a month or $299.94 a year for 200 emails a week, plus native coach DMs on X, the Recruit Score with a projected division level, NIL valuation, school matching and fit, roster needs analysis, areas of improvement analysis, and a 24/7 recruiting assistant. There is no sales call, and monthly plans cancel anytime.
Where CaptainU is the better choice: it covers far more sports (26 options at signup versus NextCommit's seven), it offers human counselors on Gold and Platinum, and college coaches can search for athletes in its network. NextCommit has no human advisor, no events or showcases, and no profile network that coaches browse; it is an outreach tool. It covers baseball, softball, football, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's basketball only. Clubs and academies can use a separate NextCommit product, priced by roster size (contact us for pricing).
CaptainU or an alternative: who should choose what
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| You want the cheapest published plan for messaging coaches and will do the work | CaptainU Silver ($22.50 a month), after the free trial |
| You want one counselor meeting a month without a large package | CaptainU Gold ($39.95 a month) |
| You want a dedicated human advisor | CaptainU Platinum ($199.95 a month) or NCSA (price quoted after a call) |
| You want a larger network and a personal recruiting coach | NCSA |
| You want to know which programs have openings at your position | Rosterhunter |
| You want a free tracker for a short list of schools | Recruit Playbook free tier |
| You play baseball, softball, football, soccer, or basketball and want personalized emails from your own inbox | NextCommit, free up to 10 emails a week |
| You play a sport outside those seven, such as lacrosse, volleyball, or wrestling | CaptainU or FieldLevel, which each list 26 sports |

FAQ
Coach email questions athletes ask most
Is CaptainU legit?
Yes. CaptainU is a real recruiting company, founded in 2007 according to CaptainU, and owned since April 6, 2026 by MLQ Ventures LLC of Frisco, Texas. Its Trustpilot score is 2.0 from 48 reviews, and reviews report frustration with coach-activity alerts and cancellations, so use the free trial before you pay.
Is CaptainU worth it?
Yes, if you want a low-cost way to message college coaches and will do the outreach yourself; Silver is $22.50 a month with no contract. It is a weaker buy if you expect alerts or the platform alone to create recruiting interest, which is the most common complaint in reviews. Try the 14-day free trial first, which allows 10 colleges and 10 coach messages.
How much does CaptainU cost?
$0 to $199.95 a month. Bronze is free, Silver is $22.50 a month, Gold is $39.95 a month, and Platinum is $199.95 a month, as listed on captainu.com on September 30, 2026. Only monthly prices are shown, and the Terms of Service say there are no refunds on cancellation.
Who owns CaptainU now?
MLQ Ventures LLC. It acquired CaptainU effective April 6, 2026, and CaptainU says MLQ is led by a senior CaptainU staff member. Before that, CaptainU belonged to Blue Star Sports, later renamed Stack Sports, from December 2016.
Is Stack Athlete the same as CaptainU?
Yes. CaptainU relaunched as Stack Athlete on May 20, 2025, then returned to the CaptainU name before its April 2026 sale, and stackathlete.com now redirects to captainu.com. Both the older Stack Athlete iOS app and the new NewCaptainU app list MLQ Ventures LLC as the seller.
Can you cancel CaptainU?
Yes, at any time. Log in, open Plan, and downgrade to Bronze Free; the Terms of Service say there are no refunds on cancellation. To delete the account entirely, downgrade first and then email Help@CaptainU.com.
Which is better, CaptainU or NCSA?
CaptainU, if published prices and a low monthly cost matter most; it charges $22.50 to $199.95 a month with no contract. NCSA fits families who want a larger network and a personal recruiting coach, but it does not publish prices and asks families to schedule a call for a quote. NCSA says 40,000+ college coaches can be reached through its free profile, versus 10,000+ college coaches claimed by CaptainU.
