The short answer: how track recruiting works

Track and field recruiting runs on verified marks. A college coach can look up your results before watching any video, so the job is to get good marks posted, compare them with the right levels, and put them in front of the coach who coaches your event.

Most college staffs split by event group: distance and cross country, sprints and hurdles, jumps, throws, and sometimes multi-events. The event coach usually recruits their own athletes, so send your email to that coach and copy the head coach.

Division I coaches can call, text, email, and meet you off campus from June 15 after sophomore year, and visits start August 1 before junior year. Division II coaches can communicate at any time, and Division III and NAIA have no timing limits on calls and messages.

Step 1: Get verified marks on a results site

  • Compete at meets that post results to Athletic.net, MileSplit, or your state association.
  • For sprints, hurdles, and the 800m, race at meets with fully automatic timing (FAT). Coaches trust FAT more than hand times.
  • Note the wind on sprints, hurdles, and horizontal jumps. Wind-aided marks are worth listing, labeled as wind-aided.
  • Throwers: list the implement weight. Men's shot put, discus, and hammer get heavier in college.
  • Run cross country and indoor if you can. Every season adds marks and shows your improvement.

Step 2: Compare your marks with the right level

The cleanest test is whether your mark would score at the conference championship of a program you are targeting.

Conferences in the same division can be far apart, which is why one Division I school may recruit you and another may not. Compare conference by conference, not division by division.

  1. 1Pick a conference at each level you are considering.
  2. 2Open last season's conference championship results on TFRRS or the conference website.
  3. 3Find the mark that placed around eighth in your event.
  4. 4If your mark is close, or improving toward it, add that conference's programs to your list.

Step 3: Know where the programs and coaches are

Programs and coaches in NextCommit's coach data for the October 2026 launch, from vendor coach files dated September 11, 2026. Programs are schools with at least one listed coach; counts include volunteers and graduate assistants, whom NextCommit does not select by default. About 90% of these coaches are listed for both the men's and women's teams, so each coach is counted once.

By title, more than 1,100 are distance coaches, and more than 500 each coach throws and jumps. That is why emailing only the head coach misses the person who will actually recruit you.

NCAA Division II2601,125
NCAA Division III3651,911

Step 4: Follow a grade-by-grade track timeline

The 2026-27 Division I calendar is mostly contact periods: August 1 to December 13, 2026 and December 27, 2026 to July 31, 2027. Dead periods fall around signing week (November 9 to 12), the cross country championships (November 21), the coaches convention (December 14 to 26), and the indoor and outdoor championships.

Freshman yearCompete in every season you can, get results posted, track PRs with timing and windCoaches read improvement across seasons
Sophomore yearCompare marks with conference meets, build a 30 to 50 program list, email event coachesDivision I calls, texts, emails, and off-campus contact open June 15 after this year

Senior yearSign once you have a written offer, or keep racing and emailing new PRsFor the Class of 2027, Division I and II signing opens November 11, 2026

Step 5: Email the event coach and the head coach

Send the same core email to the event coach and the head coach at each school, with a line that shows you know their team, such as a recent conference result in your event.

  1. 1Write a subject line with your grad year, events, and your best PR.
  2. 2In the first two lines, list your events and PRs with meet, date, timing method, and wind.
  3. 3Link your Athletic.net, MileSplit, or TFRRS profile so the coach can verify every mark.
  4. 4Add video for field events and hurdles, where technique matters.
  5. 5List your upcoming meets, including championship meets.
  6. 6Explain why the program fits: your marks would score in their conference, the event group need, academics, or location.

Step 6: Know the contact rules by division

Division I moved cross country and track and field off-campus contact up to June 15 after sophomore year on October 7, 2026. You can email any coach at any age.

FAQ

Questions athletes and parents ask

How do I get recruited for college track and field?

Get your marks posted on a results site, compare them with what scores at the conference championships of the levels you want, and email the event-group coach and the head coach at 30 to 50 programs where your marks would score. Lead with your events and PRs, with meet, date, timing method, and wind.

When can college track coaches contact me?

In Division I cross country and track and field, coaches can send recruiting materials, emails, texts, and DMs, call, and make off-campus contact starting June 15 after sophomore year, and official and unofficial visits start August 1 before junior year. Division II coaches can communicate at any time, with in-person contact from June 15 before junior year. Division III and NAIA have no timing limits on calls and messages.

What times do I need to run in college?

Compare your marks with the conference championship results of the programs you want. If your mark would place around the top eight at that meet, you are a realistic recruit there. Results are public on TFRRS and conference websites, and they vary a lot between conferences in the same division.

Should I email the head coach or the event coach?

Both. Send your email to the coach for your event group and copy the head coach. In NextCommit's data, more than 1,100 coaches have distance in their title and more than 500 have sprints.

How do I get recruited for cross country?

Cross country is coached by the distance staff, so email the distance coach with your cross country course times, the course name, and your 1600m or mile and 3200m times. In NextCommit, cross country runners sign up for men's or women's track and field and pick distance events.

Are there track and field scholarships?

At most levels. Division II programs can award up to 12.6 scholarship equivalents in cross country and track and field combined for each of men and women (Bylaw 15.4.2.1), NAIA and junior college programs can offer athletics aid, and Division III programs do not award athletics scholarships. Division I schools under the House settlement rules use roster limits of 45 indoor, 45 outdoor, and 17 cross country.
