Softball Pitcher Recruiting Email Template (2026)

A softball pitcher's first email to a college coach should be 120 to 150 words: grad year, throwing hand, pitch speed with where it was measured, movement pitches, GPA, travel team, and a film link. Follow up in 7 to 10 days.

The short answer

Every softball pitcher email has the same five parts, in this order.

  • Subject line: grad year, RHP or LHP, speed, your two best pitches, GPA, and travel team. Example: 2028 RHP | 59-61 mph | drop + rise | 3.9 GPA | Valley Storm 16U.
  • Opening: who you are, where you play, and one real reason you are writing to that program.
  • Stats line: height, speed with where it was measured, each movement pitch, and a recent innings, strikeouts, and walks line.
  • Film and schedule: one link to your pitching video and your next tournament dates. No attachments.
  • Follow-up: 7 to 10 days later, with a new number, a tournament line, or a schedule.

Subject: 2028 RHP | 59-61 mph | drop + rise | 3.9 GPA | Valley Storm 16U

Coach Whitfield,

My name is Kayla Moreno. I am a 2028 right-handed pitcher at Jefferson High School in Austin, Texas, and I pitch for Valley Storm 16U. I am writing because Pine Valley has the nursing program I want, and your staff splits innings across three pitchers, which is how I have been trained.

Stats: 5'9". Fastball 59-61 mph, top 62 (camp, August 2026). Drop ball, rise ball, and changeup. Spring 2026: 88 innings, 121 strikeouts, 24 walks, 1.71 ERA. GPA 3.9.

Valley Storm plays a tournament in Round Rock, Texas, on November 7 and 8. My full schedule is here: [link]. I would appreciate the chance to be evaluated. Thank you for your time.

That is about 140 words, signature included. A coach sees the class, the speed, the pitches, and the grades before opening the film.

What stats should a softball pitcher put in a recruiting email?

Lead with speed, then movement. The ranges come from NextCommit's softball pitching speed by age page, linked in the sources below, and are measured from the 43-foot pitching distance. They are recruiting bands, not cutoffs.

Put the same numbers on one line in the email so a coach can take them in at a glance: "5'9" | FB 59-61, T62 | drop, rise, change | 88 IP, 121 K, 24 BB | 3.9 GPA."

Speed opens the evaluation and movement decides it. If your speed sits a level below your target, email that level anyway and lead the body with your movement pitches, strikeouts, and film that shows swings and misses.

Say where and when each reading was taken, and measure monthly with the same radar setup so your trend is real. When your speed moves, that is your next follow-up.

Follow-up email template for softball pitchers

Send this 7 to 10 days after your first email if the coach has not replied. In NextCommit platform data, a follow-up made a coach reply about 3 times as likely as a single email, and two or more follow-ups made it about 7 times as likely.

After this one, send an update every 4 to 6 weeks, and only when you have something new. Never send "just checking in."

When should a softball pitcher send this email?

You can email a college coach at any age. NCAA rules limit when coaches can send you recruiting messages, not when you can write to them. What changes by division is when the coach can write back.

Three D1 windows are closed to all recruiting, including email: the 2026-27 softball recruiting shutdowns from November 25 to 29, December 22 to 26, and December 31, 2026 to January 2, 2027 (D1 Bylaw 13.02.5.6). A D1 coach cannot write back during those dates.

Pick the day and the hour, too. In NextCommit data, softball coaches replied most to emails sent in May, August, and December, on Fridays and Sundays, and from 7 to 9 p.m. Central time, each measured against softball's own average. If the school is in another time zone, shift the hour to match.

When a coach replies, answer the same day with what they asked for. Most coach replies in our data arrived within a week of the email, which is why the follow-up goes out at 7 to 10 days.

Mistakes that cost softball pitchers replies

  • A top speed with no source. Give the range you sit in, the top, and where it was measured.
  • Speed with no pitches. Name every movement pitch you throw for strikes.
  • No schedule. A coach who wants to see you live needs the tournament, the dates, and your team.
  • The same email to every program. Rewrite the fit line for each school.
  • Attachments instead of one link.
  • A follow-up that says "just checking in." Send a new number, a tournament line, or a schedule.

Send a personalized version to every coach on your list

One template gets you started. A full list runs to dozens of programs across D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and junior college, and every email still needs its own reason that program fits. In NextCommit data, athletes who emailed more coaches heard back more often.

NextCommit is our product, and it handles that part. AI writes a different email for each coach from your stats, film, grades, and goals, you review it, and it sends from your own inbox. The free plan includes 10 personalized coach emails a week and the full database of 45,000+ college coaches at 1,800+ schools. Varsity ($19.99 a month) allows 50 emails a week and adds open and reply tracking and automated follow-ups. Pro ($49.99 a month) allows 200 a week and adds coach DMs on X.

FAQ

Coach email questions athletes ask most

What should a softball pitcher put in an email to a college coach?

Your grad year, throwing hand, height, pitch speed with where and when it was measured, your movement pitches, a recent innings, strikeouts, and walks line, GPA, high school and travel team, your schedule, a film link, and one reason that program fits you. Keep it to 120 to 150 words and put the speed in the subject line.

How fast do you need to pitch for D1 softball?

On NextCommit's softball benchmarks, most D1 pitchers sit at 60 to 65+ mph, with top-25 aces at 63 to 67+. D2 pitchers sit at 56 to 62, D3 at 53 to 60, NAIA at 55 to 62, and junior college at 52 to 60. Movement and command decide the evaluation once you are in the band.

Should I lead with speed or movement?

Put speed in the subject line, because coaches use it as the first filter, and put your movement pitches right after it in the email. If your speed sits a level below your target, lead the body with your movement pitches, strikeouts, and film that shows swings and misses.

When can a D1 softball coach email me back?

D1 softball coaches can send recruiting emails starting at 1 p.m. Central time on September 1 at the beginning of your junior year (NCAA Division I Bylaw 13.4.1.4, adopted June 24, 2026). Before then, a D1 coach can reply only with information that does not start recruiting. Camp emails can come at any time and do not mean a coach is recruiting you. D2 coaches can write any time, and D3 and NAIA coaches have no timing limits.

How soon should a softball pitcher follow up with a college coach?

Follow up 7 to 10 days after your first email if you have not heard back, and lead with something new: a speed gain, a new pitch, a tournament line, or your schedule. In NextCommit data, a follow-up made a coach reply about 3 times as likely as a single email. After that, update every 4 to 6 weeks.
