The short answer
Every pitcher email has the same five parts, in this order.
- Subject line: grad year, RHP or LHP, fastball range and top, GPA, and hometown. Example: 2028 RHP | 84-86, T87 | 3.7 GPA | Phoenix, AZ.
- Opening: who you are, where you play, and one real reason you are writing to that program.
- Stats line: height and weight, fastball range and top with where it was measured, each secondary pitch, and a recent innings, strikeouts, and walks line.
- Film: one link to your pitching video. No attachments.
- Follow-up: 7 to 10 days later, with a new number, outing, or schedule.

Here is the same template filled in for a junior. The athlete, school, coach, and team are made up. The numbers sit in the D2 and low-major D1 bands on NextCommit's pitcher benchmarks.
Subject: 2028 RHP | 84-86, T87 | 3.7 GPA | Phoenix, AZ
Coach Alvarez,
My name is Ethan Brooks. I am a 2028 right-handed pitcher at Lincoln High School in Phoenix, Arizona, and I play for Valley Thunder 17U. I am writing because Lakeshore has the business program I want, and your pitchers attack the zone the way my coaches have taught me.
Stats: 6'2", 185 lbs. Fastball 84-86 mph, top 87 (showcase, June 2026). Curveball and changeup. Spring 2026: 41 innings, 52 strikeouts, 11 walks, 2.39 ERA. GPA 3.7.

My next outing is a Valley Thunder tournament in Peoria, Arizona, on November 7 and 8. I would appreciate the chance to be evaluated and to send updates as my season goes. Thank you for your time.

That is about 140 words, signature included. A coach sees the class, the hand, the fastball, and the grades before opening the film.
What stats should a pitcher put in a recruiting email?
Lead with the numbers coaches sort pitchers by. The ranges come from NextCommit's pitcher recruiting standards and pitching velocity by age pages, linked in the sources below. They are recruiting bands, not cutoffs.
Put the same numbers on one line in the email so a coach can take them in at a glance: "6'2", 185 | FB 84-86, T87 | CB, CH | 41 IP, 52 K, 11 BB | 3.7 GPA."
Say where and when each reading was taken. Coaches trust showcase and camp readings more than self-reported ones. Verified beats impressive.
If your velocity is a band below your target level, email that level anyway and lead with your trend, such as "up from 81 to 85 since the fall." Coaches recruit pitchers on projection.
| What to list | Benchmarks on NextCommit pages | Write it like this |
|---|---|---|
| Fastball velocity | D1 88-95+ mph (Power 4: 92-97+), D2 84-88, D3 80-86, NAIA and JUCO 82-88. Left-handers get looks 2-3 mph lower. | 84-86, T87 (showcase, June 2026) |
| Secondary pitches | Power 4: 2+ plus pitches. Mid-major D1: 1-2 quality pitches. D2, NAIA, and JUCO: 1 quality pitch. D3: a developing secondary. | Curveball, changeup |
| Strikes | No published cut line. Coaches judge command on film and in your innings, strikeouts, and walks. | 41 IP, 52 K, 11 BB |
| Height and weight | No published cut line. Coaches read your frame as projection: how much velocity you may still add. | 6'2", 185 |
| 60-yard dash (optional) | D1 pitchers about 6.8-7.2 sec; D2 and D3 pitchers about 7.0-7.4. It matters less for pitchers than for position players. | Include it only if it helps you |
| GPA | No cut line here. Include it in every email; academics are part of every evaluation. | 3.7 GPA |

Follow-up email template for pitchers
Send this 7 to 10 days after your first email if the coach has not replied. In NextCommit platform data, a follow-up made a coach reply about 3 times as likely as a single email, and two or more follow-ups made it about 7 times as likely.
Follow-up subject
Following up | [Grad year] [RHP or LHP] | [new number, such as "now 86-88"]
Follow-up email
Coach [Last Name],
I emailed you on [date] about pitching at [School]. Since then, [one new thing: my fastball is up to [range], top [top] at [event]; I added a [pitch]; I threw [outing line] against [opponent]].
Updated film: [link]. My next outing is [event] in [city] on [date].
I am still very interested in [School] because [fit reason]. Thank you for your time.
[Full Name] | [Grad year] [RHP or LHP] | [High School] | [Phone]
After this one, send an update every 4 to 6 weeks, and only when you have something new. Never send "just checking in."
When should a pitcher send this email?
You can email a college coach at any age. NCAA rules limit when coaches can send you recruiting messages, not when you can write to them. What changes by division is when the coach can write back.
Two D1 windows are closed to all recruiting, including email: the 2026-27 baseball recruiting shutdowns from November 24 to 29 and December 22 to 27, 2026 (D1 Bylaw 13.02.5.6). A D1 coach cannot write back during those dates.
Pick the day and the hour, too. In NextCommit data, baseball coaches replied most to emails sent in June, July, and August, on Sundays and Fridays, and around 5 p.m. Central time, each measured against baseball's own average. If the school is in another time zone, shift the hour to match.
When a coach replies, answer the same day with what they asked for. Most coach replies in our data arrived within a week of the email, which is why the follow-up goes out at 7 to 10 days.
| Who is writing back | When the coach can send you recruiting emails | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| D1 baseball | August 1 at the beginning of your junior year | D1 Bylaw 13.4.1.1 |
| D1, before that date | Only a reply that does not start recruiting, such as an explanation of NCAA rules or a referral to admissions. Camp information can come at any time and is not a sign of recruiting interest. | D1 Bylaws 13.4.1.13 and 13.4.1.14(b) |
| D2 | Any time | D2 Bylaw 13.1.3.1 |
| D3 | Any time (no timing limits on electronic communication) | D3 Bylaw 13.02.10.1 |
| NAIA | Any time (no recruiting calendar restrictions) | NAIA rules for high school students |
Mistakes that cost pitchers replies
- A top velocity with no range and no source. Give the range you sit in, the top, and where it was measured.
- Every stat from your season. Pick the line that shows you throw strikes: innings, strikeouts, and walks.
- No film link, or a link that needs a login or a download.
- The same email to every program. Rewrite the fit line for each school.
- Attachments instead of one link.
- A follow-up that says "just checking in." Send a new number, a new outing, or a schedule.
Send a personalized version to every coach on your list
One template gets you started. A full list runs to dozens of programs across D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and junior college, and every email still needs its own reason that program fits. In NextCommit data, athletes who emailed more coaches heard back more often.
NextCommit is our product, and it handles that part. AI writes a different email for each coach from your stats, film, grades, and goals, you review it, and it sends from your own inbox. The free plan includes 10 personalized coach emails a week and the full database of 45,000+ college coaches at 1,800+ schools. Varsity ($19.99 a month) allows 50 emails a week and adds open and reply tracking and automated follow-ups. Pro ($49.99 a month) allows 200 a week and adds coach DMs on X.

FAQ
Coach email questions athletes ask most
What should a pitcher put in an email to a college coach?
Your grad year, throwing hand, height and weight, sitting and top fastball velocity with where and when it was measured, your secondary pitches, a recent innings, strikeouts, and walks line, GPA, high school and travel team, a film link, and one reason that program fits you. Keep it to 120 to 150 words and put the velocity in the subject line.
Should I list my top velocity or my sitting velocity?
List both. Write the range you sit in and your top reading, such as "84-86, T87," and say where it was measured. Coaches look at both numbers, and a showcase or camp reading carries more weight than one from your own radar gun.
What velocity do college coaches look for in a pitcher?
On NextCommit's pitcher benchmarks, D1 programs recruit fastballs of 88 to 95+ mph, D2 programs 84 to 88, D3 programs 80 to 86, and NAIA and junior college programs 82 to 88. Left-handers get looks 2 to 3 mph lower. These are recruiting ranges, not cutoffs, and coaches recruit pitchers on projection.
When can a D1 baseball coach email me back?
D1 baseball coaches can send recruiting emails starting August 1 at the beginning of your junior year (NCAA Division I Bylaw 13.4.1.1). Before then, a D1 coach can reply only with information that does not start recruiting, such as NCAA rules or an admissions referral. Camp emails can come at any time and do not mean a coach is recruiting you. D2 coaches can write any time, and D3 and NAIA coaches have no timing limits.
How soon should a pitcher follow up with a college coach?
Follow up 7 to 10 days after your first email if you have not heard back, and lead with something new: a velocity bump, a new pitch, an outing line, or your schedule. In NextCommit data, a follow-up made a coach reply about 3 times as likely as a single email. After that, update every 4 to 6 weeks.
